KNEC Launches Platform To Download KCSE, KCPE Certificates Online

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has launched a new electronic certificate portal, allowing previous national examination candidates to view and download digital copies of their certificates online.

The new portal is available to candidates whose certificates are in the KNEC database between 1989 and 2025, with applicants able to obtain their certificates following identity verification and payment.

The new digital platform allows applicants to create an account, verify their identity, pay a Ksh1,200 fee, and download a verifiable digital certificate without having to visit KNEC offices or their former schools.

The development is expected to benefit thousands of former students who have lost either their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) or Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) certificates.

According to KNEC’s user guide, applicants are required to register on the e-Certificate portal using their email address before completing their personal profile.

Kenyan applicants must provide their National Identity details, which are verified automatically through the Integrated Population Registration System (IPRS).

After successful identity verification, users are required to enter their examination index number, select the examination type, either KCSE or KCPE, and indicate the year they sat for the examination.

Candidates whose details are successfully verified are then prompted to pay a certificate generation fee of Ksh1,200 plus VAT and applicable eCitizen charges through available payment options.

Once payment is confirmed, the digital certificate becomes available for the applicant to download in Portable Document Format (PDF).

KNEC noted that each certificate carries a blockchain verification hash, enabling institutions to confirm its authenticity with downloaded certificates to remain available for six months.

According to KNEC, the digital platform also enables candidates to send official verification reports directly to employers, universities and other organisations.

The council has also introduced a separate verification portal for organisations such as universities, employers, government agencies and professional bodies to verify their employees’ academic certificates.

For organisations handling many applications, the system supports bulk verification of up to 1,000 certificates in a single request by uploading a CSV file and certificate documents.
