EACC Put 11 Counties On Notice Over Ksh.6 Billion Loss To Graft

EACC Arrests Kenya Power Official, Police Officer Over Bribery

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has detained a Kenya Power and Lightning Company (KPLC) employee who allegedly demanded Ksh.300,000 to restore electricity.

The suspect, Joshua Wasakha Wangeni, was apprehended on Wednesday after requesting a godown operator in Nairobi for Ksh.300,000 to reconnect electricity that he had previously unplugged.

According to the EACC, Wangeni later negotiated the ‘facilitation charge’ to Ksh.200,000, but the complainant refused to pay the bribe, and instead reported the incident to the anti-corruption authority.

EACC officials acted quickly and detained the guy while he was still accepting the payment.

He was detained at Kilimani Police Station and then freed on bail on Thursday, awaiting the outcome of the inquiry.

Police In Court Over 20K Bribery

An official from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) was detained and charged with requesting a Ksh20,000 payment to allegedly undermine a case.

The officer, who is a sergeant, was arrested by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) nearly seven years after committing the offense.

“EACC has arrested and arraigned a DCI officer based at Changamwe Police Station in Mombasa County for soliciting a bribe from the complainant as an inducement to terminate a criminal case in which the complainant was allegedly involved,” a statement released by EACC read.

On June 6, 2018, the DCI officer apparently solicited a bribe to derail investigations into a case and received a down payment for it.

The officer was arrested following a report from the individual accused of facilitating the bribe.

“He requested a financial advantage of Ksh20,000 and received an initial amount of Ksh10,000 from the complainant with the intent that, in consequence, he would compromise an investigation leading to the termination of the complaint’s criminal case,” the EACC stated.

While appearing before Mombasa Chief Magistrate Alex Ithuku, the senior officer denied all of the charges and was freed on a Ksh300,000 bond or Ksh100,000 cash bail.

According to an EACC poll conducted in March 2023, traffic and regular police are the three most bribe-prone governmental organizations.

According to the 2023 National Ethics and Corruption Survey, there is a 1.45 percent chance of being asked for a bribe every time a service is requested at the traffic police department.
