Adamson Bungei Defends Police Conduct In The Rex Masai Murder

Former Nairobi Police Commander Adamson Bungei told a Nairobi court on Wednesday that he was uninformed of the circumstances behind Rex Masai’s murder during the June Gen Z protests.

Bungei emphasized that they only established the cause after a postmortem examination.

Bungei, a witness at the inquest into Rex’s death, denied any police involvement in the fatal shooting, claiming that the demonstrations had been infiltrated by numerous individuals.

He referred to a postmortem report, which revealed that Rex died from profuse bleeding caused by a single gunshot wound.

“We did not know what caused his death until later after a postmortem was conducted,” Bung’ei said.

Rex was shot and murdered during the June 2024 Gen Z protests. They were demonstrating against the Finance Bill 2024, among other governance issues.

Bungei added that the scenario necessitated the intervention of multiple policemen from various security agencies, but that no gunshot occurred within the CBD.

“The demonstrations led to massive destruction of property and breaches of peace, and when the country is in distress, it’s our responsibility to deploy and manage the situation,” he said.

He explained that the investigation into the shooting is still underway. At the same time, former county commander Dorris Mugambi stated that no shooting incidents had ever been reported.

After getting the postmortem report, she confirmed that Rex died as a result of a gunshot wound.

Prior to this, the information they had was that the wound was caused by a sharp object.

Asked whether she was able to establish who shot Rex, Dorris said, “It can only be done by a ballistic expert.”

She told the court that she does not know the outcome of the investigations surrounding Rex’s death, stating the matter was taken up by the DCI.
