Another 144 Kenyan Police Officers Dispatched To Haiti
Kenya announced Thursday that it had dispatched more than 100 additional police personnel to Haiti after Washington reversed its decision to withdraw funding for a security mission in the unstable country.
President Donald Trump’s administration announced earlier this week that financial contributions to the mission had been suspended, but the State Department indicated Wednesday that the majority of the help would continue.
The Kenyan interior ministry confirmed to AFP that 144 officers were deployed Tuesday morning, boosting the total number in the country to more than 700.
The Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS), operating under United Nations auspices, has operated in Haiti since 2023.

However, the operation has been plagued by issues, with the UN chief stating earlier this year that more aid was required for it to be effective.
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres cautioned in January that the mission is “still not deployed to full strength,” restricting its ability to assist the national police.

Less than 800 of the 2,500 police personnel hoped for have been deployed.
Haiti lacks a president or a parliament and is governed by a transitional authority that is having to deal with extreme violence tied to criminal gangs, poverty, and other issues.
According to the UN, more than 5,600 people were killed in Haiti last year as a result of gang violence, which is nearly 1,000 more than in 2023.
More than a million Haitians were forced to evacuate their homes, three times more than the previous year.
