REPORT: Over 1800 Kenyans Apply For IEBC Chairperson, Commissioner Positions

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) selection panel has stated that it received 1,848 applications for the Chairperson and Commission Members.

The selection panel’s chairperson, Nelson Makanda, stated that the application verification process has begun and that a list of all candidates will be published soon.

“The Panel would like to reassure the public that, members of the Selection Panel are committed to conducting a fair and transparent process,” read a statement in part.

“In this regard, we shall keep the public informed at all stages of the recruitment exercise.”

Positions on the electoral body’s commission became vacant on January 16, 2023, when chairperson Wafula Chebukati announced his departure, along with commissioners Abdi Guliye and Boya Molu, whose 6-year terms had expired.

After disputing the 2022 Presidential election results, former IEBC Vice Chair Juliana Cherera and commissioners Irene Masit, Justus Nyang’aya, and Francis Wanderi were removed.

The four former Commissioners, known as the ‘Cherera Four,’ cast widespread doubt on the credibility of last year’s election, claiming that the results reported by Chebukati were never tallied as needed.

They were suspected of cooperating with high-profile Azimio la Umoja coalition members to support Raila Odinga’s candidacy.

Hussein Marjan is the only remaining member of the commission who serves as the IEBC CEO.
