Musalia Mudavadi, Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign and Diaspora Affairs CS advised Kenyans to contemplate probable evacuation, particularly from risky locations.

“The Kenyan government is considering the evacuation of Kenyans who can reach out to our consulate in Goma and our temporary offices in Congo Brazzaville,” he said.

According to Mudavadi, Kenya is concerned about the intensification of hostilities in the DRC.

Mudavadi highlighted that the confrontation between security forces and militant groups commanded by M23, which began in the eastern portion of the DRC near the Rwandan border, has quickly intensified.

He stated that warfare appears to have extended to other sections of the country.

“We continue to urge the parties in the conflict to consider an immediate ceasefire, as adopted by the Heads of State and at the Joint East African Cooperation (EAC), and Southern African Development Community (SADC) High-Level meeting in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania,” Mudavadi urged.

Despite the ceasefire agreement that went into effect on August 4, 2024, violence between the Congolese armed forces (FARDC) and the M23 has increased following the failure of the summit-level Luanda process.

M23 has dramatically increased its territorial grip over North Kivu since December. By the end of January, M23 had taken over Goma, the provincial capital.
