Babu Owino Breaks Silence On Raila-Sakaja Ties Amidst Rift Reports

Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has confirmed that he is still on good terms with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, despite Odinga’s backing for Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja.

In an interview with Ramogi FM on Tuesday morning, the legislator indicated that despite their opposing political beliefs, he will continue to support the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader.

During the interview, Babu also denied that he was preparing political vengeance against Raila, stressing that Odinga was still his party’s leader and deserved respect.

“Our divergent political opinions will not stop me from supporting Raila Odinga, because he is still my leader, and as my father, I cannot fight him. As Babu Owino, I love Raila,” he stated.

“In a house, you may find that a father loves one child more than the other. However, at the moment, the person being supported has never been part of our house,” he added.

Regarding his relationship with Raila, the opposition MP stated that he will stay a member of the ODM party despite ongoing internal political issues.

However, he urged the ODM party leadership to prioritize assisting its members before providing the same support to leaders linked with other political parties.

According to Babu, the enormous sacrifices he has made on behalf of the party, including several arrests during anti-government protests, should have ensured his party’s support.

“I have been arrested eight times—no Member of Parliament has been arrested more than me,” Babu Owino stated.

Babu Owino’s remarks come only weeks after Raila endorsed Sakaja, a member of the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), for reelection in 2027.

Addressing Kenyans on 10 February, shortly before leaving for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the former Prime Minister declared that he expected Nairobi’s leadership to back Sakaja in carrying out his mission as Nairobi County Governor.

“As I head off to Addis, I want Nairobi to remain firm and united so that my man here (Sakaja) can stay focused and deliver on his mandate efficiently,” Raila declared.
