VIETNAM: Mudavadi Issues Update On Margaret Nduta’s Execution

Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has reported success in the government’s efforts to prevent Margaret Nduta’s execution in Vietnam.

Mudavadi stated that his ministry was in continual contact with the Vietnamese authorities regarding the likely removal of the execution.

On Wednesday, March 19, the PCS addressed during a joint press briefing with Netherlands Foreign Affairs Minister Caspar Veldkamp in Nairobi.

Addressing the journalists, the CS stated that the government has since received documentation from Vietnam regarding Nduta’s claims but had yet to obtain final feedback on the topic.

While conceding the complexities of Nduta’s case, the former Vice President voiced optimism about attempts to prevent the victim’s execution in a foreign country.

“Unfortunately, a Kenyan is facing this kind of situation. It is not pleasant and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in particular, my PS has been trying to converse with his counterpart in Vietnam,” Mudavadi assured.

“The talks have been for us to see if there can be a mitigation in this process and we hope that there will be some success so that there can not be an execution,” he added.

Despite oozing hope, Mudavadi noted that the government was not working to overturn the decision, but rather to negotiate clemency for Nduta.

He went on to say that, in addition to Nduta, there were approximately 1000 Kenyans serving prison sentences for various offenses in foreign nations.

However, Mudavadi stated that the government was unaware of the precise crimes committed by each of the 1000 persons who had begun their sentences.
