PLP’s Martha Karua Confirms She Will Vie For President In 2027
Martha Karua, the leader of the People’s Liberation Party (PLP), has announced that her name will appear on the presidential ballot in 2027.
She urged Kenyans to consider voting for a female president, claiming that male rulers have failed to unite the country.
Karua stated that as president, a woman will be able to unite the country in the same way that she unites her family and cares for her husband and children.
“God willing, I will vie for the presidency. I will then be able to unite Kenya as a mother unites her home,” she said while addressing Isiolo residents on Monday.

“A mother would not let her kids to go to bed hungry and when there is not enough food; she finds a way to divide it among them. That is what we want for Kenya,” she said.
“You have tried men since independence, this time round kindly try a woman under PLP.”
Karua was Raila Odinga’s running mate in the 2022 general election, representing Azimio.
In March 2025, Karua stated that she will not be a presidential running mate in the 2027 general elections.
She stated that if she is not the presidential candidate, she will support anyone her team chooses.
“Personally, I have said if I’m not a candidate, I’m not going to be deputy. The deputy business ended in the 2022 elections,” she said on Hot 96.

Karua first stated her intention to not deputise anyone in January, claiming that she was done with the business of playing number two.
“To my friend Senator Daniel Karaba, at this level I cannot become anyone’s deputy again,” she said then.

“If there’s any prayer you’re making is for me to get the president’s seat that I will vie for in the next election. That one (running mate) I got done with in 2022.”
Karua added: “I did my work (asking for votes) thoroughly, if you, my supporter, haven’t done your work thoroughly, I have gone past that stage. Just wait, I will ask for your vote, and I will vie for the top position.”
Karua emphasized that she will continue to collaborate with like-minded individuals to bolster the country’s opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
She unsuccessfully ran for president in 2013. In 2017, she ran for Governor of Kirinyaga but lost to Anne Waiguru.
