Ruto Appoints Ex-MP, Former Deputy Governor To Head Lucrative Parastatals
In the most recent round of appointments to various state bodies, President William Ruto appointed three individuals, including a former Member of Parliament and an ex-Deputy Governor.
Ruto named Lawrence Gumbe, Sylvanus Maritim, and Lily Ng’ok as chairpersons of several government bodies via a gazette notification.
Maritim, a former Ainamoi MP, has been chosen Chairperson of the Kenya Industrial Estates (KIE) Board of Directors and will serve for a three-year term.
“In exercise of the powers conferred section 6 of the State Corporations Act, as read together with section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint— Sylvanus Maritim to be the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Kenya Industrial Estates, for a period of three (3) years,” the notice read.
Maritim’s appointment resulted in the removal of Lily Ng’ok from the same position. Maritim was elected as Ainamoi MP on a Jubilee Party ticket from 2017 to 2022.
Prior to his nomination, he held another state position as chair of the Information and Communications Technology Authority.
Despite the revocation of her earlier appointment, Lily Ng’ok, Kericho County’s former Deputy Governor, has been named the new Chair of the Information and Communications Technology Authority (ICTA), succeeding Maritim. She will serve a three-year term.

Ng’ok served as Kericho County’s Deputy Governor from April 2021 till the end of the 2017-2022 term.
She took over the post after the death of Deputy Governor Susan Kikwai on March 20, 2021.
Ng’ok previously served on the County Executive Committee (CEC) for Education, Sports, and Social Services.
Governor Paul Chepkwony nominated her, and the Kericho County Assembly confirmed her nomination on April 23, 2021. She was then sworn in as Kericho County’s second Deputy Governor.
President Ruto also appointed Lawrence Gumbe as the Non-Executive Chairperson of the Nuclear Power and Energy Agency’s (NPEA) Board.

Gumbe, a highly regarded Kenyan engineer, will serve a four-year tenure.
Despite his considerable engineering background, Gumbe has been actively involved in Kenyan politics, particularly with the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
Gumbe formerly served as the LDP’s chairman. In this position, he participated in a variety of political actions and legal proceedings.
These include a notable case in 2005 where he, alongside other party officials, challenged actions by the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) leadership.
