TURKANA: Police Arrest 4 Suspects For Allegedly Killing Kenyan Fishermen

Ethiopian officials nabbed suspects in the gruesome murder of four Kenyan fishermen near Lake Turkana in the Todonyang, Turkana County.

Ethiopia’s Dassanech District officials apprehended the four after a security operation along the Kenya-Ethiopia border on Friday evening.

During the unplanned operation, which was undertaken in collaboration with Kenyan authorities, the police recovered a handgun from one of the suspects.

According to reports, the arrests occurred after police held the suspects’ parents in an attempt to push the four into surrendering to local authorities.

The Ethiopian authorities in Dassanach urged their Kenyan counterparts to immediately engage them in the apprehension of the perpetrators.

Online videos and photographs showed a squad of Ethiopian police officials escorting the accused in a boat.

Security has since been increased in the area while investigations continue. The motivation for the deaths is still being investigated.

Meanwhile, the suspects are accused of killing four Kenyan fishermen on Thursday, May 15, at about 4 a.m., while they were ready to deploy their nets in Lake Turkana.

Turkana Deputy County Commissioner George Orina told the press that the bodies of the four fishermen were discovered on Thursday morning laying by the lake.

A local administrator who lives near Todonyang told journalists that on the fateful day, he heard gunshots around 4 a.m., which he said could have come from Lake Turkana.

A similar incident occurred on February 23 of this year, when 20 Kenyan fishermen were slain by heavily armed Ethiopian militia.

A witness claimed to have seen the suspects shoot at the fisherman at dawn.

According to a police investigation, the death of the 20 fishermen may have been retaliatory after three Ethiopian fishermen were killed by suspected Turkana bandits earlier this year.

“After the attack, the militia seized the boats and fishing gear before they escaped to the Ethiopian side,” claimed one of the fishermen who survived the attack.
