CS Duale Gives Fresh Orders To Hospitals, SHA On Cancer Treatment
Aden Duale, the Health Cabinet Secretary, has directed national referral hospitals, the Social Health Authority (SHA), and the Digital Health Authority (DHA) to formalize relationships with cancer centers of excellence.
The instruction comes amid fears regarding cancer treatment in the country, after the Kenyatta Referral Hospital’s lone Linear Accelerator (LINAC) Elekta machine failed, leaving hundreds of patients stranded.
Speaking at a high-profile health event, CS Duale emphasized the importance of strategic collaboration and resource sharing among important health institutions to improve the quality and accessibility of cancer care.
The CS spoke during the formal launch of the Cyclotron 11 MeV machine, which is part of the country’s cancer-fighting efforts.

The Cyclotron 11 MeV machine is a cutting-edge cancer treatment technology that primarily produces radioisotopes to aid in early detection and precise therapy.
It produces important isotopes like Fluorine-18, which are utilized in Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scans to diagnose cancer in its early stages, hence increasing treatment outcomes.
The gadget is currently available at Nairobi West Hospital’s Centre of Excellence.
Duale emphasized that Kenya has the potential to become a regional hub for medical excellence and tourism if healthcare institutions collaborate to use their expertise and infrastructure.
Cancer is one of the top causes of mortality in Kenya, taking approximately 30,000 lives each year.

Late diagnosis and limited access to advanced therapy have worsened the issue, necessitating immediate intervention by the Ministry of Health.
“There is an importance of strategic collaboration, resource-sharing, and digital transformation in making Kenya a regional hub for health excellence and medical tourism,” said Duale.
Furthermore, the CS advocated public-private partnerships to supplement government measures, ensuring cancer patients receive complete, high-quality care without incurring excessive financial burdens.
He reassured cancer patients that the country is committed to ensuring that they receive proper diagnosis, treatment, and care to alleviate the suffering of their sickness.
