Collins Kibet, grandson of former President Daniel Moi, was sentenced to two weeks in jail on Wednesday, July 9, after serving a two-day civil jail term just days before.

While being hauled away, Kibet said that he had been suffering since his father died, and that he had no one to help him, despite his pleas for mercy.

In an emotional breakdown, he claimed to have implored President William Ruto for clemency without success, stating that no one cared about orphans anymore.

“I’m sick. I have tried. I have suffered since my father died. I don’t live anywhere. I have asked for mercy,” he shouted.

“No one has mercy these days for an orphan. I have asked the president of this country to help me, but no one can help me.”

Kibet appeared in court only two days after being sentenced to two days in civil detention for contempt of court.

“I commit him to a civil jail term for two days, and we shall come back on Wednesday to give further directions on the issue,” the Nakuru Principal Magistrate Kipkirui Kibelion said on Monday, July 7.

He was arrested on Thursday, July 3, and spent the weekend on remand for contempt of court charges stemming from a child support case filed by his estranged wife, Gladys Jeruto Tagi.

Earlier this year, he was instructed by the same court to enroll his children in Kabarak Schools and pay for their medical insurance plan, which he failed to do, triggering the arrest.

This is his second arrest in relation to the matter; he was previously arrested in September 2024.

Kibet received a seven-day prison sentence for failing to comply with earlier court orders to pay child support.

At the time, Principal Magistrate Kipkurui Kibelion asked his lawyers to compute all unpaid child support payments and serve the defense lawyers within three days.

Before his arrest in Ong’ata Rongai, authorities had been looking for him for seven months.

Kibet’s estranged wife launched the complaint in 2021, claiming that he of failed to support their two children.

Kibet then claimed that he was broke and couldn’t pay for his children’s needs since he was surviving on the generosity of others.
