National Police Responds To Reports of DIG Lagat’s Duty Return

The National Police Service (NPS) has debunked a news report claiming that its spokesperson, Muchiri Nyaga, denied accusations that Deputy Inspector of Police Eliud Lagat had resumed his job.

The flagged media card, presumably from a local news station, stated that the police spokesperson was unaware of Lagat’s return to office.

NPS had encouraged the news source to obtain clarity from individuals stating that he would resume on Monday.

In an X post labeling the news card as fake, NPS responded with “Disclaimer…FAKE!!!” to distance the spokesperson from allegations of being uninformed of the DIG’s return.

This came just hours after the Daily Nation published a front-page report on July 14 claiming that DIG Lagat was free to resume his responsibilities on Monday.

The publication attributed this remark to Douglas Kanja, the Inspector General of Police.

It further emphasized that Lagat had not confirmed the news because attempts to contact him had been futile.

The IPOA apparently refused to comment on the incident because it was still under investigation.

However, a source close to the probe informed the paper that the IPOA investigation had discovered no evidence linking the DIG to the death of teacher-cum-blogger Albert Ojwang, and he had been exonerated of all charges.

Lagat, the complainant in the case that landed Ojwang in jail, had stood aside to allow for an open investigation into the incident.

Ojwang died while in police detention at Central Police Station in Nairobi, after being transported from Homa Bay’s Mawego Police Station to face allegations of defaming the DIG on social media.

Following NPS’s contradictory statement on the sequence of events, Kenyans flocked to the streets to protest the tragedy. Many claimed that the DIG ordered the execution.

So far, the Director of Public Prosecutions has accepted murder charges against three police officers: the station’s OCS, Samson Talaam, and Police Constables James Mukhwana and Peter Kimani.
