Another Governor Ditches UDA, Joins Gachagua’s DCP Days After Kang’ata Defection
In a fresh political development, Nyandarua Governor Kiarie Badilisha has joined former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) barely three weeks after the party clinched the highly charged Ol Kalou by-election.
In a statement on Wednesday, July 29, Gachagua announced that Kiarie and the members of the Nyandarua County Assembly had officially ditched the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and would defend their seats on a DCP ticket.
“I am delighted to receive Governor Kiarie Badilisha of Nyandarua County and the entire County Assembly into the DCP Party,” read part of Gachagua’s statement.
“They have assured me that they will defend their seats on DCP Party tickets, and they shall form part of the aspirants in the party primaries next year,” he added.
According to the DCP leader, Governor Badilisha and his team had joined the party in response to what he termed the ‘liberation of Kenya’ movement.
“The people of Nyandarua County, led by their Governor, have brought a message of goodwill from the people of Nyandarua,” Gachagua disclosed.
“They are answering the call for the liberation of Kenya.”
He added that the party shared the same vision for the country’s future and expressed confidence that DCP would achieve its political goals ahead of the next General Election.

“On the liberation of our nation, we are on the same wavelength. With certainty, we shall achieve the best future for our nation,” the DCP leader said.
While welcoming Badilisha and his team, Gachagua alleged that more leaders were leaving rival political parties to join his party, which he claimed had rapidly gained popularity within the Mt Kenya region.
The latest development comes just four days after Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata officially joined DCP after quitting President William Ruto’s UDA.
Kang’ata was formally welcomed into the party by Gachagua on July 24, with the Murang’a Governor announcing that he would not seek re-election on a UDA ticket.
The latest defections are expected to intensify political realignments ahead of the 2027 General Election as parties continue to recruit influential leaders and strengthen their grassroots support.
Earlier this month, the party secured a major victory after its candidate, Sammy Kamau Ngotho Waweru, won the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election in a landslide.
