Governor Faces Another Impeachment A Year After Senate Pardon
The Kericho County Assembly has filed another move to impeach beleaguered Governor Erick Mutai, almost a year after he escaped another impeachment attempt.
In an official statement dated August 6, Sigowet Ward MCA Kiprotich Rogony notified the clerk of the governor’s impeachment motion.
“Kindly find attached the following documents for your action: Proposed motion for the removal by impeachment of Dr. Erick Mutalas, Kericho County Governor, Evidence in support of the said proposed motion; and Signed list of Members in support of the proposed Motion,” the letter reads in part.
All eyes are now on the County Assembly of Kericho. The impeachment motion must be prosecuted strictly on its merits this time round. Those who plunder public resources must be held to account, and no one—regardless of influence—should come to their rescue. @GeneralekipV pic.twitter.com/n630IQ7CDe

In his move, the MCA stated that he had supplied papers to support the impeachment motion.
This includes evidence in support of the motion, a signed list of MCAs who support the motion, and a draft motion to remove the Governor.
In handwritten notes, Kericho County Assembly Speaker Patrick Mutai acknowledged that the motion followed Standing Order No. 70, which established the procedure for impeaching a county leader.
The county clerk, for his part, directed that the proposal be scheduled by the Assembly Business Committee for tabling and debate.
This will be the MCAs’ second effort to oust the Governor from office.
The proposal was tabled hours after sources said that the Governor held a late-night meeting on Tuesday to persuade his COs and CECs to support him.
It is claimed that the Governor sought the backing of the COs and CECs after the county heads threatened to forsake him to face the impending impeachment alone.

The COs and CECs reportedly informed Governor Mutai at a crisis meeting held at a hotel in Awasi, Kisumu county, that they would not be supporting him this time.
According to reports, the COs and CECs donated funds to help the struggling county chief buy his way out of the impending impeachment, which they said he abused.
In the previous impeachment, 31 County MCAs voted to remove the county boss, but he was saved when 34 senators voted to end the hearing, while 10 voted in favor.

In the then motion, the Governor had been accused of gross violation of the Constitution and other laws, including misappropriation, misallocation, and unlawful drawings of county revenue and county finances, and misappropriation and/or abetting misappropriation of publicly raised funds.
