Gachagua Puts IG Kanja On Notice Regarding Alleged Riots Plans

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has spoken out against purported threats against him over his upcoming visit to Mbeere North in a harsh letter addressed to Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja.

On Wednesday afternoon, November 12, Gachagua released a statement calling on the IG to detain a group of people whose video, which had gone viral two days prior on social media and threatened the former DP.

Gachagua identified the people and asserted that they were recruited to thwart a local governor’s campaigns in Mbeere North and had ties to him.

Gachagua is scheduled to tour Mbeere North on November 16, and a video has emerged of people openly making threats against him and his Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) outfit.

Concerningly, a man in the video can be heard hinting that Gachagua may face hostility when he visits Mbeere North to campaign for the united opposition candidate ahead of the November 27 by-elections.

The former DP accused police of turning a blind eye to attempts to harm him and his faction, citing past events in which his presence was disrupted by rioting.

The Mbeere North parliamentary seat became vacant because President William Ruto appointed Geoffrey Ruku, the area’s Member of Parliament, to the Cabinet.

In September, Gachagua’s Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) attempted to build opposition unity by announcing that it would not run a candidate.

Instead, the DCP supported the Democratic Party, which is affiliated with former Public Service CS Justin Muturi.

Gachagua underlined that his November 16 tour of the region will continue, and that the opposition’s preferred candidate remained the frontrunner to win the by-election.

On Tuesday, Chama Cha Kazi (CCK) Party Leader Moses Kuria also made wild claims about a planned attack on Gachagua’s next campaign tour over an alleged Ksh 10 million debt.
