ODM MP Fiercely Defends Ruto’s Gov’t Borrowing
Alego Usonga Member of Parliament, Samuel Atandi, on Wednesday, November 26, criticized individuals attacking government programs while defending government borrowing.
Atandi denied that the government’s new capital-raising methods are illegal, accusing critics of deceiving Kenyans.
He contended that the country cannot prosper without investing in critical industries like agriculture and energy.
The legislator emphasized food security as a key component of economic stability, stating that the government’s subsidies are among the most innovative tactics seen in recent years.
He stated that industrialization and job creation are dependent on reliable electricity, which requires significant investment.
Atandi was speaking during a debate on a 30-page document tabled in the House, which outlined the President’s state of the nation address.
He endorsed securitization and other borrowing processes, arguing that they are valid methods of raising finance for national initiatives.
One of the securitization programs he defended was the Ksh 16.38 billion financing agreement with United Bank for Africa (UBA), intended to clear overdue road building invoices and resurrect delayed projects.
“For some members of parliament to articulate that this is an illegal program, I think this is really defeatist,” Atandi said.
“I think this shows how narrow-minded some of our colleagues are, especially when they are approaching these programs in a manner that suggests that they are thinking tribally.”

He emphasized that the government is implementing no criminal program.
According to him, the initiatives are supported by investors and private individuals who have researched Kenya’s legal system and found confidence in committing resources.
He accused fellow MPs of politicizing borrowing instead of focusing on its impact on ordinary citizens.
