KASIPUL: 23 People Arrested, 15 Vehicles Impounded During Violent By-Election
At least 23 persons were arrested, and 15 cars, including two motorcycles, were confiscated with crude weapons during the Kasipul by-election, which was marked by violence.
Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma and his bodyguard were hurt in a scuffle at Agoro Sare Primary School after they were attacked by supporters of independent candidate Philip Aroko.
The MP’s bodyguard’s firearm was stolen during the confusion, but it has since been recovered.
The quiet environment at Agoro Sare Primary School changed dramatically when independent candidate Philip Aroko arrived at the property, which has eight polling booths.
ODM chief agent and Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma, who had been waiting for ODM candidate Boyd Were to appear and vote, was an unintended victim of the tense confrontation.
Kaluma initially greeted Aroko warmly, thinking his caravan was for Were’s.

Hon. Peter Kaluma: These goons Aroko is walking with are from Nairobi, and they are very dangerous. What has shocked me is that I've been attacked as police are watching.#K24Updates #K24Siasa pic.twitter.com/4YdYm2IH5Y
However, tensions rose moments later when Aroko’s followers unexpectedly turned on the MP, beating him with kicks and blows despite repeated cries for calm.
During the struggle, Kaluma’s bodyguard was also hurt, and the hostile mob stole his handgun, which was eventually recovered.
“The goons left in a huff after the attack, with police reinforcement arriving at the venue minutes after the incident happened,” Kaluma said.

“With the news of the attack spreading like wildfire, goons allegedly on a revenge mission armed with crude weapons landed at the school but were repulsed by security officers.”
“With the incident raising tensions, the ODM candidate was escorted to the polling station by police to vote in a bid to avoid any possible clash with the rival team,” Lawrence Koilem, Police Commander, Homa Bay, said.
“We will report the incident to police,” Boyd Were said.
For the time being, Kasipul locals are waiting to find out who will be the next Member of Parliament from among the ten candidates vying for the job.
