U.S Moves To Review Its Ties With Tanzania Over Citizens Oppression
The United States has indicated that it is conducting a complete review of its relationship with the Tanzanian government.
The US administration expressed concern about religious freedom, free expression, investment restrictions, and violence during the country’s recent elections.
In a statement, the United States underlined the importance of its long-standing alliance with Tanzania, which has historically produced prosperity and regional stability.
“The United States values its longstanding partnership with the people of Tanzania, which has brought prosperity to our populations and security to the region,” the statement read.

“Recent actions by the Government of Tanzania, however, raise grave concerns about the direction of our bilateral relationship and the reliability of the Tanzanian Government as a partner.”
It continues, “As a result, the United States is comprehensively reviewing our relationship with the Government of Tanzania.
“The Government of Tanzania’s ongoing repression of religious freedom and free speech, the presence of persistent obstacles to U.S. investment, and disturbing violence against civilians in the days leading up to and following Tanzania’s October 29 elections, required this reconsideration of our ties.”
The inquiry comes in the aftermath of the October 29 elections, during which the United States reported claimed troubling violence against citizens both before and after voting.
According to the statement, these activities endanger American residents, tourists, and US interests in Tanzania and threaten decades of regional prosperity and peace.
According to the statement, the Tanzanian government’s recent actions have generated serious doubts about the country’s ability to be a reliable partner.
“These actions have put American citizens, tourists, and U.S. interests in Tanzania at risk, and threatened to undermine the mutual prosperity and security that have defined our partnership for decades.”
In addition to election-related violence, the study highlighted continuous persecution of religious freedom and free speech in Tanzania, as well as significant barriers to US investment.
According to them, these considerations have triggered a rethinking of how the US interacts with the country, indicating prospective shifts in diplomatic, economic, and security relations.
The United States, however, has not established a timetable for completing the review.

On December 1, the US Embassy in Tanzania issued a security advisory to its nationals, warning of potential disturbance ahead of the planned statewide anti-government rallies on December 9.

The Embassy warned that protests could start as early as December 5, and urged visitors and locals to take extra caution.
The Embassy cautioned that travelers to Tanzania over the next few weeks should expect considerable difficulties.

These include the prospect of nationwide curfews, an internet blackout, the stoppage of boats to Zanzibar, the cancellation of international flights, and checkpoints that enforce severe movement regulations.
