Oburu Odinga Crowned Luo Community Leader At Piny Festival
Oburu Odinga, the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), has been named the Luo community’s official leader.
On December 17, 2025, President William Ruto attended the 5th Luo Piny Festival in Migori, where Oburu was coronated.
Raila Odinga’s elder brother follows in the footsteps of the late former prime minister, taking over the position that his brother held until his death in October.
The new Luo community leader has committed to serving with integrity, unity, and purpose.
“I accept this responsibility with humility and a deep commitment to serve with integrity, unity, and purpose,” Oburu wrote on his social media account.

During the coronation, Oburu was crowned with the traditional Luo feather crown, which represents leadership.
Oburu was also given a spear and shield to represent his role as defender of the Luo people.
The ODM leader was also given a whisk, which represents the appeal for peace when whisked.
Oburu Odinga, the new Luo Community leader, performed a ceremonial spear dance while chanting Jowi.

The crowning ceremony was overseen by Ker, the Luo spiritual leader and curator of the Luo tradition.
During the ceremony, President Ruto was anointed as a Luo leader by the Ker.
The President was also presented with a feather crown, shield, and spear.
This is the second time that President Ruto has been crowned as a leader among Luos. He was first installed on January 2, 2025, during the Piny Luo Festival in Siaya County.
