The Ministry of Health has announced the implementation of an online system for declaring batch numbers for all imported, exported, and domestically produced health items.

This was declared by Health Secretary Aden Duale in a statement issued on December 23, when he outlined new measures in the fight against the illegal distribution of prescription-only drugs.

The online system will become operational on January 1, 2026. Duale states that batch declarations will be necessary and enforceable.

The government intends to track the movement and sale of prescription medications.

Duale also announced that the Ministry had completed the Track and Authentication Standard for Health Products and Technologies.

The system promises to improve traceability, accountability, and visibility throughout the pharmaceutical supply chain.

The CS states that the Ministry is now undertaking 100% inspections of all licensed wholesalers in the Nairobi Region for the 2026 licensing cycle.

Practitioners who fail to comply are routinely referred to the Board’s Ethics and Disciplinary Committee (EDC) for regulatory action.

The Committee’s sanctions include the suspension or revocation of practising licences.

Duale reported that more than ten practitioners had been brought before the EDC for disciplinary proceedings.

The new EDC Board Members were appointed on November 7, and the board is slated to be fully operational in January 2026.

The board is required to handle pending issues and refer non-compliant practitioners for appropriate regulatory action.

Duale also stated in the statement that the Ministry is nearing the end of the scheduling process for drugs that will be made available to Kenyans.
