EAC Pledges FULL Support To Somalia After Somaliland-Israel Accord

The East African Community (EAC) has broken its silence on rising tensions in Somalia and Somaliland, confirming its support for Somalia following Israel’s recognition of Somaliland as an independent state.

According to a statement issued by the community’s secretariat on Sunday, December 28, the EAC recognises the Federal Republic of Somalia as a single sovereign entity governed by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

The community, which includes Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan, and Somalia, announced that it has aligned with the African Union’s position as expressed in the Consultative Act and decisions concerning Somalia’s sovereignty.

The EAC also cited the treaty for each establishment, stating that it only acknowledged the Somali borders inherited at independence.

“In accordance with the treaty for the establishment of EAC, the community recognises the Federal Republic of Somalia with its borders inherited at independence,” read part of the statement.

The EAC also asked that Israel maintain Somalia’s unity and geographical integrity.

The block urged all players to follow existing regional and international legal frameworks governing territorial integrity and state sovereignty.

Their statement now rejects Israel’s recognition of Somaliland as an independent state, a move that has raised significant tensions in the area and across the continent.

The EAC’s proclamation comes hours after Somalia’s President Mohamud held a phone conversation meeting with East African leaders William Ruto of Kenya, Samia Suluhu of Uganda, and Yoweri Museveni.

In the phone call conversation, the heads of state reportedly assured their support for Mogadishu even as tensions continue to rise.

As the community condemned Israel’s actions, celebrations took the better part of Sunday evening in Hargeisa, Somaliland’s capital.

The citizens of the self-declared independent state held celebrations after recognition.

The citizens termed the Israeli declaration as diplomatic and stated that they were now free from the war-torn Somalia.
