Several businesses and properties worth millions were demolished during a night operation on Tuesday, January 13, in the Nyayo area to make room for an imminent infrastructure project.

Bulldozers and excavators were seen destroying structures in the region in photos uploaded online, escorted by police officers on the ground to oversee the operations.

The demolitions occurred along Douglas Wakiihiru Road, right behind the Nyayo National Stadium.

Among the properties destroyed during the operation were cars in auto yards, a car wash, and restaurants, among others.

According to accounts, some of the firms damaged during the operations have ties to a governor.

Photos show burning tyres in the middle of the road, showing that some homeowners and business owners attempted to protest against the demolitions.

According to preliminary findings, the government issued repeated notices requiring companies in the vicinity to vacate before demolitions began.

The demolitions are intended to make way for the development of a train station that will connect the Nairobi CBD to Nyayo and the new Talanta Stadium.

Notably, the government has already razed residences and businesses in the neighborhood for a government project.

In 2019, the government razed a vehicle bazaar beside Nyayo Stadium that was tied to Governor Wamatangi and had businesses such as a restaurant, a pharmacy, a hairdresser, a boutique, and a cosmetics store.

Armed officers were also present to coordinate the demolitions, which caused a heavy traffic snarl up along the busy Langata Road.

The latest incident comes just months after residents in the Ngara area in Nairobi protested after the demolition of their shops by unknown people.

The demonstrations ensued on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, after a group of men began demolishing shops and kiosks located at Fig Tree market to pave the way for the construction of modern housing units.

Reports indicate that the market space had initially been leased to the traders for a specific duration; however, upon the expiry of the deal, the traders declined to leave the area.
