REINCARNATION! Uchumi Supermarket Reopens TWO Branches in Nairobi
Uchumi Supermarket has reopened two Nairobi locations, indicating a revived presence in Kenya’s retail industry.
The shop has reopened branches at Unicity Mall on Thika Road, near Kenyatta University, and Lang’ata Hyper off Lang’ata Road.
The openings mark a gradual resumption of business after a period of restructuring.
The Unicity Mall store, which opened in late 2024, provides essential items and bakery services.

The Lang’ata Hyper property is currently a mixed-use retail and commercial area with multiple tenants in addition to Uchumi’s retail operations.
In a social media post announcing the reopening, the shop stated that the decision represented a renewed relationship with its customers.
“Uchumi is back — not just as a store, but as a story reborn. The shelves are filling, the ovens are warm, and the memories are alive again,” the company said.
“From generations that grew up with us, to a new one discovering us — this is your home of value, rising once more. Welcome back to the supermarket you never stopped loving.”
Uchumi was founded in the 1970s and listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange in 1992.

The company is now functioning under a court-supervised Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA), which permits businesses to restructure their operations while continuing to trade.
As part of this strategy, Uchumi has concentrated on making the most use of its properties, including the Lang’ata location, by leasing space to other firms to supplement its current operations.
The reopening of the Unicity branch and reconfiguration of the Lang’ata store are part of Uchumi’s overall strategy to sustain its position in the Kenyan retail industry.
