Acquiring a birth certificate is one of the most important steps in securing a child’s identity, and for single mothers in Kenya, the process is straightforward but requires proper documentation.
Single mothers can acquire a birth certificate for their child by visiting a Civil Registration Department office or a Huduma centre, submitting the required documents, and completing a registration form.
According to Huduma Kenya, the process costs between Ksh90 and Ksh130 and typically takes about 10 days after successful verification.
To apply, the mother must present several documents, including a clinic or antenatal card, her national identity card, and proof that she has never been married.
During the process, the mother will also be required to submit additional supporting documents, such as a religious certificate if available.
While the late registration is discouraged, if the birth was not registered within the required period, the application will undergo a vetting process conducted by the registrar to confirm the accuracy and authenticity of the information provided.
“Late registration of births is highly discouraged,” Huduma Kenya stated.
“However, if not registered, you are required to fill out and submit a registration form in person at a Civil Registration Department office near you. The applicant will be vetted.”
At the Huduma Centre or Civil Registration office, the applicant fills out a birth registration form and submits all required documents for review.

For adult applicants over 18 years seeking late registration, extra documents such as school leaving certificates, school letters, or identification cards are required to establish identity over time.
It is worth noting that the clinic or antenatal card is one of the most important documents, as it provides primary evidence of the child’s birth details, including the date and place of birth.
The registrar may request further documentation depending on the circumstances of the application in a move aimed at ensuring that only genuine cases are approved.
Once all documents are verified and approved, the processing period takes about 10 days, with applicants advised to follow up at the same Huduma Centre where they submitted their applications.
