8-Storey Building Collapses, 4 People Trapped As Emergency Providers Delays Over 8 Hours
At least four people are feared trapped after an eight-storey building under construction collapsed in Oloolua, Kajiado North Sub-county, Kajiado County.
According to eyewitnesses, the building came down on Friday night at around 11pm following heavy rains that pounded the area.
Residents said several construction workers were at the site when the structure caved in, leaving fears that more people could still be buried under the rubble.
Following the incident, emergency responders, including Nairobi County disaster management teams and the Kenya Red Cross, were alerted.

However, residents claim that rescue teams had not arrived at the scene nearly 10 hours after the collapse.
Speaking to the press on Saturday morning, angry residents accused the county government of delaying rescue operations as families and locals desperately waited for those trapped to be pulled out alive.
“It is now ten hours since the building collapsed, and there are several people there who have been covered by the rubble. Ten hours is too much,” said one resident.
Another resident questioned the government’s response, accusing the local authorities of preventing locals from accessing the site while no active rescue efforts were underway.
“According to me, there is reluctance by the government. I woke up at 10am, and those covered are yet to be rescued,” the resident added.
“They have prevented us from accessing the site, yet they do not want to conduct the rescue.”
Residents insisted that those feared trapped were construction workers who had been carrying out duties at the site before the building collapsed.

However, at the time of publishing this article, the local authorities, including the police and the country government, had yet to confirm the exact number of casualties.

The latest incident comes on the back of similar cases across the country, particularly in Nairobi and its neighbouring counties, where multiple reports of storey building collapses have been recorded in the past two months.
Just a month ago, five people died while several others sustained injuries after a building collapsed at the Highrise Estate in Kibera, Nairobi County.
While confirming the April 8 incident, Nairobi Chief County Officer in Charge of Disaster Management Bramwel Simiyu said the injured were rushed to Mbagathi Hospital for medical attention.
According to the Kenya Red Cross, the collapsed building was under construction when it caved in today at around 2pm.
