Gov’t De-Registers 46 Companies, Leaves Thousands Without Employment

Thousands of Kenyans have lost their jobs after the government, through the registrar of companies, announced the dissolution of 46 companies effective May 8, 2026.

In a notice, the Deputy Registrar of Companies, Hiram Gachugi, said that 46 had been shut down with immediate effect, with 381 others earmarked for dissolution in the next three months.

“Pursuant to the Companies Act, it is notified for the information of the general public that the following companies are dissolved and their names have been struck off the Register of Companies,” said Gachugi.

Although the exact number of workers affected has not yet been disclosed, the shutdowns could trigger fresh concerns about unemployment at a time when many Kenyans are already struggling with high living costs.

The list of companies registered from the government register spans a broad range of industries, including logistics, construction, hospitality, consultancy, trading, and information technology.

The list also contains some international companies that have also been deregistered. However, the registrar did not provide reasons for the mass deregistrations.

Under Kenyan law, companies may be dissolved if they fail to meet legal obligations such as filing annual returns, maintaining active registration records or complying with regulatory requirements.

Once dissolved, a company ceases to legally exist, meaning it cannot continue operations, own assets, or employ staff.

At the same time, Hiram revealed that 381 companies across different sectors are facing intended dissolution after allegedly failing to comply with statutory requirements.

The registrar explained that the companies earmarked for closure would soon cease operations in the country unless they explain, within three months, why they should remain registered.

Pursuant to the Companies Act, the Registrar of Companies gives notice that the names of the companies specified hereunder shall be struck off from the register of companies,” read part of the notice.

The Companies Act provides that companies listed for intended dissolution can object or regularise their status before the process is finalised for them to continue with their operations.
