NPS Issues Statement On OCS Dishen Angoya’s Court Appearance

The incident involving Central Police Officer Commanding Station (OCS) Dishen Angoya has taken a fresh turn after the National Police Service denied reports of a planned court appearance.

On Tuesday evening, May 19, police issued a statement rejecting online claims that Angoya was scheduled to appear in court.

“The NPS wishes to respond to entirely erroneous and misleading social media reports alleging that the OCS of the Central Police Station in Nairobi was being processed for a court appearance. This information is incorrect,” a statement from the Police Service read.

Angoya was the focus of conjecture earlier in the day when it was revealed that he had been taken unwell at Lang’ata Hospital, shortly after the purported release of 64 fuel price protest suspects.

According to initial reports, the OCS “improperly conferred a benefit” on himself by aiding the suspects’ release.

While the NPS did not dispute Angoya’s arrest, the service denied any pending court appearances.

They clarified that matters involving police officers are handled through established internal administrative and disciplinary mechanisms within the Service.

“For avoidance of doubt, at no time was the OCS processed for a court appearance,” the statement added.

The statement also reiterated that internal matters involving officers do not automatically result in court proceedings, as some are strictly handled administratively within the Service.

Members of the public have since been urged to solely rely on official police channels for information and verify statements shared on social media before spreading them.

As far as action against Angoya is concerned, the OCS could potentially be subjected to an inquiry by internal units such as the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) to determine whether there was any form of misconduct.

Depending on the severity of the matter, the OCS can face internal disciplinary action ranging from a warning or suspension to interdiction, transfer, or demotion.

Notably, Central Police Station leadership has come under scrutiny over the past year.

This is after the last slice of controversy that gained national attention, being the assault and subsequent murder of blogger Albert Ojwang’.

Angoya has been released unconditionally, which has raised eyebrows about the motive for his arrest.
