“Gachagua Is a Clout Chaser!” – Murkomen On Former DP’s Assassination Claim
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has responded to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s claims that a police squad was deployed to assassinate him.
Speaking at a news conference following a security briefing on the June 25 demonstrations, the CS denied Gachagua’s allegations, claiming they were manufactured for political publicity.
“Most of the things he was talking about, that he was going to be assassinated, he is a clout chaser. So anything that is of public interest, he likes to make it about himself,” Murkomen said.
He was replying to Gachagua’s remarks on June 24, in which he claimed that a police squad he had previously accused of trying to murder him had been redeployed to Nyeri County ahead of the June 25 rallies.
CS Kipchumba Murkomen: This ethnic profiling of public officers for personal gain must come to an end. Gachagua stated police working under the code name “Nairobi Sierra” had gathered in Mathira and were planning attacks in the area.
According to the former Deputy President, the same officers were involved in an incident at a church service in Othaya earlier this year, where he alleged they had intended to target him but failed to do so.
However, Murkomen rejected the allegations, stating that Gachagua had made similar claims about the previous administration and minister.
In January this year, a killer squad of 12 rogue police officers under code name ‘Nairobi Sierra’ arrived at the home of Mathira member parliament.
They were hosted to kingly breakfast and briefing by his wife.

“I am used to his tirades. By the way, it is not a new thing. Even in the last administration, he used to say the same about the former minister,” he said.
“But I see now he is very cozy with that minister and he doesn’t ask questions about what he used to say in the past.”

The CS further accused the former Deputy President of repeatedly engaging in ethnic profiling of public officers.
He argued that Gachagua had consistently singled out the Deputy Inspector General of Police in his remarks instead of directing his concerns to Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, who heads the National Police Service.
“He must respect offices. This ethnic profiling of public officers for personal gain must come to an end,” he added.
The row continues in the aftermath of nationwide demonstrations held to commemorate victims of the 2024 Gen Z protests, which saw political leaders and activists face off with security officers in several locations.
Gachagua’s allegations also emerge against the backdrop of reported abductions and enforced disappearances since the 2024 protests.
Human rights groups are intensifying calls for investigations and accountability in cases allegedly linked to political and civic activism.
