REVEALED: New Rules For Timber, Wood Product Businesses – KFS

The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has implemented new registration criteria for investors intending to access forest-planted materials from State forests.

Under the new approach, all forest industry investors, including those who previously had licenses, must register for the fiscal years 2026/2027 and 2027/2028 via the KFS online e-registration system.

In a July 21 announcement, the agency stated that the e-registration procedure will end on Tuesday, August 11, at noon, and instructed all investors to understand the registration requirements and evaluation criteria before submitting their applications.

“Note also that all applicants are required to visit the KFS website www.kenyaforestservice.org and www.environment.go.ke for a copy of the document guiding the registration process and also familiarize themselves with the evaluation criteria,” the notice stated.

“The documents can also be downloaded from the public procurement information portal www.tenders.go.ke.”

KFS stated that the registration is for small, medium, and large-scale investors interested in purchasing forest products such as timber, plywood, pulp wood, treated transmission poles, and fuel wood.

The service has directed new applicants to use its online e-registration portal to provide their details and submit applications.

Existing investors who received licenses in 2024 are required to submit their details anew in the e-registration system.

Additionally, those who submitted applications in 2025 but were not verified have been instructed to log into the system using their previous KRA PIN and password, confirm or update their existing details, and resubmit their applications.

The registration exercise will be used to develop a list of approved forest industry investors who will be eligible to bid for available forest plantation materials.

KFS said submitted applications will first be reviewed through the online system before successful applicants undergo physical verification of the information provided.

Investors will be notified of their application status through the email addresses submitted during registration.

After verification, successful applicants will be invited to participate in bids for forest plantation materials whenever they become available during the two financial years.
