Nakuru Court Convicts TWO Police Officers Of Murder After Fatal Shootings
The High Court in Nakuru has convicted two police officers of murder in separate cases involving the fatal shooting of three people.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), in a statement issued on Thursday, July 30, said the convictions were secured in cases involving an ordinary police constable and an Administration Police Constable.
“The two convictions mark another milestone in IPOA’s efforts to promote police accountability and justice for victims of unlawful police actions,” the statement read.
The police constable was convicted on two counts of murder over the deaths of John Maina and Charles Kariuki, who were shot at Mercy Njeri Shopping Centre in Nakuru County on December 3, 2016.
In a separate ruling, the administration officer formerly attached to Salgaa AP Post was found guilty of murdering Emmanuel Makokha, who was fatally shot at Salgaa Trading Centre on October 2, 2017.
IPOA said the convictions were delivered by the High Court on July 6 and July 9, respectively, following investigations by the authority and years of legal proceedings.
According to court documents, the police constable’s case followed a reported break-in at a mobile money shop at Mercy Njeri Centre.
They found the two men dead at the scene with multiple gunshot wounds after police responded to the incident sparking uproar among residents the community.

During the trial, the prosecution presented nine witnesses, while the constable denied shooting the two men and told the court he arrived at the scene after hearing gunshots.
The court cited ballistic evidence linking a bullet recovered from the scene to the constable’s firearm and evidence that he had been issued ammunition before the incident.
The administration officer’s case was linked to an incident where police officers had responded to reports of suspected criminal activity in Salgaa Trading Centre in Rongai Sub County, Nakuru.
The prosecution presented evidence that the officer was at the scene and that his firearm had discharged four rounds.
The officer denied the charge and told the court he acted in self-defence after the deceased allegedly attempted to grab his colleague’s firearm.
However, the court found the prosecution had proved the murder charge beyond reasonable doubt.
