Traffic Gridlock Hits Mai Mahiu Road After Multi-Vehicle Accident

Heavy traffic clogged the busy Mai Mahiu Escarpment Road on Tuesday, August 4, following a multi-vehicle collision that completely blocked the road.

According to witnesses, the accident along a sharp turn involved two trucks and a private car. 

Images and videos shared online show the aftermath of the accident involving two trucks in a completely destroyed condition.

Additionally, several people can be seen trapped in the wreckage of the accident, as people nearby try to rescue them.

At the time of publishing, it is unclear whether the accident claimed any lives.

In videos shared online, the truck, which has completely closed both lanes of traffic, has fallen to the side and is lying on a Toyota Premio. 

It is also unclear whether the truck was descending the hill; however, the other truck involved in the accident was going up the hill.

The truck, which mainly ferried sand and other construction materials, had its front cabin completely damaged.

Authorities are yet to issue a statement regarding the incident as well, as motorists are encouraged to use alternative routes.

Maai Mahiu is found along the A8 South Rironi–Maai Mahiu–Naivasha Road, which forms a vital part of the Northern Corridor linking Nairobi to the Rift Valley and western regions, which is also connected by the Mai Mahiu–Narok Road.

For private vehicles, motorists can use the Nairobi-Kinangop-Naivasha route via the upper Nakuru Highway through Limuru, Kimende and Njabini, though traffic volumes are rising.

The Suswa-Ewaso Kedong-Ngong Road link remains clear for light vehicles.
