“It Was An Assassination Attempt!” – Orengo Says After Attack On His Official Vehicle
Siaya Governor James Orengo has alleged an attempt on his life after his official vehicle was torched at a rally in Migori County.
The governor went on an impromptu visit to Migori on Saturday, August 29, where he took the Linda Mwananchi agenda to the county before being met with violence.
In a statement after the incident, Orengo claimed that his vehicle was sprayed with live bullets before being set on fire, describing the ordeal as an attempt on his life.
According to the governor, by the time the ordeal occurred, he was already out of the vehicle and was using another one in the convoy.
“You thought you eliminated me, but I am always steps ahead. You can’t burn down a movement, and you will never intimidate me,” Orengo stated.
Orengo further revealed that his vehicle was first sprayed with live bullets in attempts on his life.
However, it was later torched, as part of concealing the evidence, after the attackers allegedly realised he was not in the vehicle.
“To the cowards who sprayed live bullets into my car and torched it in Awendo to hide your crimes: your desperate violence only proves your fear,” Orengo said.
The governor vowed that the incident would not force him to abandon his political activities, insisting that the alleged attack had failed to intimidate him.
The incident followed the disruption of a political engagement by Linda Mwananchi in Migori Town, where Orengo was addressing residents.
Video footage from the scene showed the governor being rushed into his vehicle as tear gas was thrown, forcing his entourage to leave the area.
The incident has heightened concerns over political violence in the Nyanza region, coming less than two weeks after violence disrupted a Linda Mwananchi rally in Homa Bay County.

The latest attack on Orengo’s motorcade and rally was condemned by several opposition-aligned leaders, including Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, his Kiharu counterpart Ndindi Nyoro, and former Law Society of Kenya President Faith Odhiambo.
The trio described the attack as unacceptable and warned of the consequences of unchecked political violence.
However, by the time of this publication, the police had not yet stated the circumstances surrounding the attack.
The police have maintained that there is no room for political intolerance and violence.
They also stated that any politician who is found to support and finance violence against their competitors will be met with consequences.
This will include being barred from vying in the 2027 General Election.
