Ruto Orders CS To Build 3,000 Housing Units For NYS Recruits

President William Ruto has directed Ministry of Housing Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome to build additional hostels to accommodate 3,000 more recruits ahead of the planned 20,000 additional recruits next year.

Speaking on Monday at the Kenya National Youth Service passing out parade in Gilgil, the Head of State stated that the government is committed to ensuring that more young people receive NYS training.

“I have already instructed the Ministry of Housing to provide additional hostels to house 3,000 extra recruits at the National Youth Service,” the President stated.

He also directed the Ministry to develop housing for NYS staff, as it does for all other services.

The government has launched a new initiative called Climate Works Mtaani Initiative, which will absorb a portion of the recruits.

This is intended to support the anticipated recruitment of the next batch of recruits, which is expected to exceed 20,000.

“We are making sure as a government that more young people benefit from this training and the attendant vocational training that comes with it,” he explained.

The President also stated that the recruits would play an important role in greening the country and combating the effects of climate change.

“I also want to announce that National Youth Service will be supervising the cohort of young people,” he added.

“We will be recruiting shortly under our Climate Works Mtaani Initiative, which will bring more young people into the space of greening Kenya.”

The NYS aims to plant one billion trees by 2032, which will be accomplished through the Climate Works Mtaani Initiative. Overall, the state intends to plant a billion trees.

In preparation for the intake, the President directed the recruitment of 200 additional cadet officers and 500 private officers to support the NYS’s exemplary work.

The additional hostels will be able to house 3,000 additional recruits, as well as provide the necessary accommodations.

Approximately 15,000 people graduated from the service. The President encouraged the graduating class to stay the course and pursue success while upholding the values that had brought them this far.
