Musalia Mudavadi, Prime Cabinet Secretary, has been tasked with locating a female Kenyan truck driver who was kidnapped in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Grace Wanza Munyao, 45, was kidnapped by Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) rebels.

According to the Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC), a political-military coalition, the rebels kidnapped Wanza on August 27 in Kiseguro town.

The AFC claims that the FDLR violated a ceasefire agreement reached between rebel groups in Eastern DRC and has continued to threaten local agricultural activities in the area through kidnappings and looting.

“Our organisation stands shoulder to shoulder with our compatriots and reiterates its commitment to protecting them and defending their rights against these terrorist acts,” said AFC.

Former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama has urged CS Mudavadi to act quickly to locate Munyao.

“I am asking Prime Cabinet Secretary @MusaliaMudavadi, who also serves as the Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs, to urgently secure the release of Grace Wanza Munyao,” Muthama wrote on X.

Fighting in Eastern Congo has escalated over the last two decades, with deadly clashes affecting residents of South Kivu, North Kivu, and Ituri provinces.

In December 2023, severe clashes between the military and insurgents, most notably the M23 and the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), escalated, displacing millions of people.

M23 is a predominantly Tutsi rebel group with links to the Rwandan and Ugandan governments, whereas ADF is an ISIS-affiliated militia group.

In March 2024, the United Nations (UN) reported that the number of internally displaced people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo had reached 7.2 million.
