Two foreigners were fined Ksh30 million on Thursday and sentenced to one year in prison after being convicted by the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) Court of trafficking narcotic drugs.

The two foreigners were arrested on March 13, 2024, following an intelligence-led operation by DCI officers.

The convicts were apprehended in the Nyamakima area by a team of detectives from the Transnational Organized Crimes Unit, assisted by their Anti-Narcotics Unit counterparts.

After being apprehended, they led detectives to their homes in Umoja and Santon, where they were discovered with heroin and cannabis.

“The duo led the detectives to their places of abode at Umoja and Sunton where they were found with 39.04 gms of heroin and 25.71 gms of cannabis,” part of the DCI statement read.

The two were arraigned in JKIA court and pleaded guilty to the charges.

In addition to the jail term and fine, the court ordered that the two be deported to their home country once their sentence was completed.

The drugs seized are expected to be destroyed, as the court has ordered.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has been on a mission to combat drug trafficking in the country.

During a four-day operation targeting drug dens in the coastal region, detectives from the agency apprehended a KDF officer and several other suspects on Sunday.

The KDF officer and a juvenile were arrested after being found in possession of narcotic drugs such as heroin, marijuana, and diazepam, among others.

The DCI has maintained that drug traffickers must abandon illegal activities in favor of legitimate business ventures or face the harsh consequences of the law.

They have continued to encourage Kenyans to report drug trafficking in their communities.
