DESREE MORAA: Health Ministry Launches New Program For All Health Workers After Intern Doctor’s Death

The Ministry of Health announced on Tuesday the launch of a workplace mental wellness program for all healthcare workers in the country.

The announcement came after the death of Desree Moraa, an intern doctor who reportedly committed suicide after working for hours at a medical facility in Gatundu.

While mourning Moraa, Health Cabinet Secretary Deborah Barasa stated that the move would be implemented in collaboration with the County Governments.

According to Barasa, this will help to strengthen support systems so that those facing challenges do not feel lonely.

In her statement, the CS stated that the tragedy required a renewed commitment to addressing the rising mental health burden within the country.

Moraa, an intern at Gatundu Level 5 Hospital in Kiambu County, reportedly died on Sunday night.

According to the police, her body was discovered dangling from the top of her bedroom balcony by colleagues.

Police officers who arrived at the scene discovered the deceased’s body hanging on a tightrope, as well as a note she had written explaining the reason for her actions.

Her colleagues, in their comments on the matter, attributed her death to her working conditions, with reports indicating that Moraa worked for approximately 36 hours before her death.

Following her death, the body was moved to the mortuary for an autopsy. The area police officers have since launched an investigation into the matter.

Meanwhile, Health CS Barasa expressed regret for the incident and promised to improve working conditions for healthcare workers throughout the country.
