A woman suspected of stealing children has been apprehended following a manhunt by officers from the Anti-Human Trafficking and Child Protection Unit.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) announced on Sunday that Mary Akinyi Mulamula was apprehended in Nairobi’s Kabete area after officers received a report of a missing child.

“The child was stolen from her home in Muchingu, Mukango Sub-Location, Kakamega County, on June 6, 2024,” said DCI.

Mulamula is accused of deceiving the farmhand by claiming she was taking the child to Kakamega to enroll in a sponsorship program that promised a monthly stipend of Ksh.9,000.

According to the DCI detectives involved in the operation, their efforts to locate the suspect were successful after identifying her hiding place.

‘’After relentless investigations, the officers’ efforts paid off when they successfully rescued the victim alongside another victim, apprehending the suspect in the process,’’ DCI added.

The suspect was confirmed to be in police custody as officers conducted investigations before presenting her to a court of law for charges.

The DCI subsequently stated that its detectives will remain steadfast in their efforts to protect children from all forms of trafficking.

The syndicates primarily operate in the Western, Rift Valley, and Nairobi regions.

In June of this year, three suspected child traffickers were lynched by members of the public in Butere Kakamega County.

DCI claims that she had two victims at the time of her arrest, who have since been rescued. She will remain in police custody pending further action.
