IEBC Officers, Nairobi Water Employee Arrested For Using Fake Certificates

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) arrested four public officers on Wednesday, October 30, for using fake certificates to secure government jobs.

EACC Spokesperson Eric Ngumbi confirmed the arrests, stating that the four were found working with fake academic papers.

Two of the four suspects were arrested on Wednesday at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

One worked as an assistant elections officer, while the other was assigned to the commission’s revenue allocation department.

The third was arrested at the Micro and Small Enterprises Authority, and the fourth at the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company.

Following their arrest, the suspects were held at the EACC Integrity Centre Police Station, awaiting to appear at the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court on October 31.

The arrests come as EACC continues its crackdown on fake academic certificates in the country. The Commission announced earlier this week that it would conduct a nationwide crackdown.

There has been an increase in forgery cases, with people obtaining government jobs using fake academic certificates.

The Commission revealed that high-ranking officers, including sitting Members of Parliament, top county officials, parastatal heads, and medical officers, are being investigated.

According to the EACC’s quarterly report, there has been an increase in the number of people using fake degrees and diploma certificates to land high-profile jobs, particularly in the government.

According to a Public Service Commission (PSC) audit, more than 2,000 Kenyans have used fake academic documents to gain employment at 331 government institutions.

In an effort to eliminate the threat from government parastatals, the EACC has increased its crackdown on public officers who possess forged academic credentials.

According to a list released by PSC, 103 academic certificates were forged this year at the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration.

Among them are 78 Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) certificates, 23 fake diploma certificates, and two forged degree certificates.
