Kidero, Hussein Tene Appointed To State Councils
Hussein Tene Debasso, an ally of President Ruto, has secured a high-profile government position in the latest round of nominations.
Tene was appointed to the National Youth Service Council by Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi, according to a gazette notification issued on November 15.
His nomination comes after legal wrangles resulted in the suspension of his most recent appointment as chair of the Kenya National Trade Corporation (KNTC) Board.
In February 2023, the Employment and Labour Court suspended Tene’s appointment after a suit submitted by Paul Rukaria opposing his dismissal as chair of KNTC.

“Pending the hearing of the application of the inter-parties, the respondents and their agents, representatives, employees, or anyone else under their direction, are barred from effecting the gazette notice, which purports to de-gazette the petitioner herein as the chairperson of the board of directors of the Kenya National Trading Corporation,” noted the court.
Rukaria, a retired commissioned officer of the Kenya Defence Forces, was appointed by former President Uhuru Kenyatta on August 5, 2022, four days before the presidential election, for a three-year tenure.
He filed a lawsuit following his removal, claiming that no conversations with the State Corporations Advisory Committee occurred prior to his appointment being revoked.
“Section 7 (3) of the State Corporations Act is clear that before the President can revoke the appointment of any board member, there have to be cogent reasons for the said revocation and that the same must be subjected to consultation with the state Corporation Advisory Committee,” he said in his petition.
Tene’s nomination is considered a reward for his allegiance to Ruto, and he appears to be on track to join the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Tene’s relationship with Ruto dates back to the 2022 General Elections when he indicated interest in the Isiolo governor seat on the UDA ticket.
However, just days before the election, Tene stepped out in favor of an independent candidate Godana Doyo.
Meanwhile, Ruto nominated former Nairobi governor Evans Kidero as chair of the KNTC board, thus putting a stop to the competition for the government position.

The Kenya National Trading Corporation is crucial to maintaining consumer pricing and administering the government’s procurement operations.
KNTC’s extensive warehouse and logistics network has long been regarded as a cornerstone in ensuring the efficient distribution of commodities.
Ruto’s decision to appoint Kidero as CEO reflects a planned effort to revive the corporation’s operations in the face of Kenya’s evolving economic concerns.
