The parents of three children killed in a horrific fire in Kericho County’s Kapsogut district on Friday night have finally spoken out about the situation.

According to the father, Leonard Kigen, he had gone out to fend for the family before learning the awful news about what had happened to his children.

Two of the three children, Sandara (12), Enock (8), and Abigael (6), are said to have been keeping the other sibling who lived with a disability company during the incident.

“I do menial jobs around here so that my children can at least not sleep hungry. I had seven of them but now it is very sad that I have lost half the number,” Kigen stated.

“The elder ones were playing before they fell asleep. Initially, they were keeping the disabled one company. That is the reason these all children were consumed,” Judith Chemutai, a relative added.

The mother of seven children is alleged to have left home on Friday evening to attend a circumcision graduation ceremony for the boys.

Witnesses said the three died after being trapped inside their house by one of the siblings, who had gone to play with friends.

Despite the fact that officials are already examining the incident, the cause of the fire remains unknown.

Neighbors who spoke with the media claimed that odd sounds before the fire, raising concerns about a possible phone blow due to overcharging.

“There is a sound that was heard, this was revealed by a neighbour who told us that there was a bang from the house before it caught fire,” Charles Korir, a retired chief narrated.

First responders who spoke with the press reported that the children’s parents were not present at the time of the incident but left a phone charging.

Villagers suspected that the phone had burst, starting the fire.

The three children, one of whom had a disability, died in the fire while inside the main house, which was constructed of wood and iron sheets.

All of the two parents’ goods were burned by the raging fire, which left them in excruciating misery even as villagers attempted to console them.

The neighbours, along with the father, are now left with little choice but to appeal for support from well-wishers and local officials to bury the three and help the family rebuild their lives.
