‘God Has Taken All My Darlings!’ – Wetang’ula’s Father Lovingly Mourns Wife

One may expect a husband to cry when saying goodbye to his wife, but Mzee Dominic Wetang’ula made mourners chuckle with his amusing words during her funeral.

Speaking at Mama Ann Wetang’ula’s burial on Friday, his wife, the father of National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, turned a mournful occasion into an opportunity for shared laughter.

Mzee Dominic had the audience in stitches when he announced that he had no intention of marrying again, despite receiving interest from potential suitors.

“Laiki mnisikilize, kwa umri wangu huu, wasichana wengine wako hapa wanatamani waje wawe bibi yangu. Mimi sitaki bibi yeyote. Uzuri wa wanawake nimeona. Sasa natafuta bibi wa nini? (I don’t want a wife. I have seen the beauty of women. Why would I want another wife now),” he asked.

The 97-year-old stated that his two spouses have passed away, making him a senior bachelor.

He stated the Friday ritual performed in Bungoma was his second wedding to his late wife.

Mzee Dominic proceeded down memory lane, claiming that they originally married on August 20, 1950, correcting the dates on the burial programme, which read August 21.

“Kwa programme wameandika 21, lakini mimi najua ni August 20. Tumeishi na tumebarikiwa na Watoto,” he said.

(In the programme, they write 21, but I know it was August 20. We’ve been blessed with children.)

Mzee Dominic went on to praise his late wife as a powerful woman, citing the number of children she gave birth to.

“Bibi yangu alikua na nguvu kama yangu. Nasema hivyo kwa sababu aliza mapacha safari nne (My wife was as strong as me. I am saying this because she delivered sets of twins four times),” he said.

“Sifikiri katika Kenya hii kuna mtu amepata mapacha safari nne kama mimi. kwa hivyo mimi ni ndume (I don’t think there is anyone in Kenya who can give birth to twins four times. So, I am a bull).”
