Parents Storm Moi Girls’ High School After Night Fire As Bitter Memory Creeps In

Following the report of an evening fire, a group of Moi Girls’ High School Nairobi parents went to the school and camped out at the gate.

In a video published online, the parents were seen addressing the press and regretting being denied admission into the school to ensure their children’s safety.

One father, speaking to the media amid the ruckus caused by other parents camping at the gate, claimed that the school administration had not bothered to update them despite knowing they were present.

He stated they had seen media stories suggesting all of the pupils had fled unharmed, but they needed to confirm the information for themselves.

“We want to go inside, see, and ascertain that our kids are safe. We are deeply concerned. We just need reassurance that our children are okay,” he said.

The parent then questioned why the school was denied them access despite the fact that they were the students’ parents.

He further advised that if the school was unable to let them in, the administration should come outside to address their complaints.

“This management—if they can’t let us in, they should come out, speak to us, and assure us there’s nothing to worry about,” he added.

The video shows an ambulance from St. John’s with its sirens wailing in the background as additional parents arrive, intensifying the drama at the school’s entrance.

Another parent told a local TV station that they had been waiting for a long time and were overwhelmed with dread, particularly given the conspicuous presence of ambulances.

“Tunaona ambulance tu na hatujui. Pia, moto tumeiona kutoka huku. Shule watuingize tujionee. (We can see ambulances, but we don’t know why. We also saw the fire from here. The school should let us in to confirm for ourselves),” the parent said.

According to the Kenya Red Cross, a fire broke out last night in one of the dormitories, although the cause is unknown.

Videos circulating online showed thick smoke billowing from the dormitory before red flames broke out, causing alarm.

The Red Cross said that property had been destroyed, but underlined that evacuations were completed quickly and no students were injured.

The Nairobi Fire Brigade also responded quickly and successfully contained the fire.

A Painful Memory

The frightening episode, however, has brought up painful memories of the school’s 2017 tragedy, in which ten girls died in a similar fire.

In 2021, a court ruled on a lawsuit that parents had been pursuing for years.

It stated that the 2017 fire was sparked by a 14-year-old girl seeking to coerce her parents into transferring her to a different school.
