According to Makadara Police Commander Judith Nyongesa, an unknown number of persons were scavenging for scrap metals in the structure, which was demolished three days ago and may still be trapped beneath the wreckage.
Nyongesa, who is directing a multi-agency rescue mission that includes the Kenya Defence Force, the Red Cross, and the Nairobi County Government, said the operation would run until late at night as bulldozers sift through the wreckage to find individuals who are feared to be trapped.
The event happened less than a week after another building set for demolition fell in the Kiamaiko neighborhood as a group of young people were rummaging for scrap metal.
