President William Ruto has appointed Chief of Defence Forces Charles Muriu Kahariri to chair the presidential team for the Kenya Home of Human Origins Museum and Science Park in the Lake Turkana Basin.

In a Gazette Notice, the president also appointed Mary Gikungu, Director General of the National Museums of Kenya, to the task team.

CDF Kahariri succeeds his predecessor, the late Francis Ogolla, whose nomination to the task force was subsequently rescinded.

According to the notification, Kahariri’s appointment would begin immediately.

“It is notified for the general information of the public that His Excellency the President has appointed Gen. Charles Muriu Kahariri – Chairperson and Director General, National Museums of Kenya to be a member of the Steering Committee of the Taskforce on the Development of Kenya Home of Human Origins Museum and Science Park in the Lake Turkana Basin,” the notice read in part.

In the announcement, Ruto appointed four further appointments to improve service delivery in his administration.

Jackton Ojwang was reappointed chairperson of the Energy and Petroleum Authority’s (EPRA) board of directors for a four-year term.

Professor Mohamed Said was appointed non-executive chairperson of the board of the Kenya National Commission for UNESCO for a three-year term.

Furthermore, former Nairobi Speaker Benson Mutura was appointed to chair the Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority Board (NAMATA) for three years, while Dr. Ningala Kalachu was appointed to chair the Council of Veterinary Medicines Directorate for three years.

CDF Kahariri and his team will be responsible for conducting research, designing the project, and putting it into action.

This will entail researching and identifying various infrastructure projects that should be implemented in order to fully realize the Lake Turkana Basin’s tourism potential.

The task group was formed to investigate a new dimension in Kenya’s tourist sector, which has traditionally been dominated by wildlife and beach tourism.

This would be accomplished by encouraging tourists to investigate and connect with the origins of humanity.

On the same day that he became the new CDF, Kahariri was promoted to the rank of General.

Initially, he was Lieutenant General and Vice Chief of Defence Forces.
