Corruption Case Haunts Uhuru PS Despite The Two ODPP Withdrawal Applications

Lilian Omollo, former Gender and Youth Principal Secretary will appear in court from May 28 to May 30 to confront corruption charges.

Omollo, who served under former President Uhuru Kenyatta, has been scheduled to appear in court nearly a year after the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) filed a plea to dismiss her cases.

The former PS was accused of a Ksh468 million loss at the National Youth Service (NYS), which she oversaw.

“This case relates to corruption and conspiracy to defraud charges against the former Permanent Secretary and employees of NYS,” ODPP on Monday, May 27, spoke of the case summary.

The Kenyan government is suing the PS and 32 other individuals, the majority of whom are former NYS employees.

In 2023, the ODPP applied twice to withdraw the case against the embattled former PS.

When filing an application before a Milimani anti-corruption court, the DPP stated that none of the witnesses presented implicated Omollo directly or indirectly.

In addition, the DPP informed the court that the claimed financial loss occurred prior to her appointment on December 18, 2015.

In July 2023, a month after the case crumbled, the anti-corruption court declared it withdrawn.

It should be emphasized that at the time, only Omollo was excused from the case, while the prosecution pursued the cases of the other co-accused.

The ODPP did not specify whether PS Omollo had new charges preferred against her or if the co-accused would face trial.

The dispute comes from suspicious multibillion-shilling bills incurred by NYS during the 2013/2014 fiscal year.
