Mudavadi, Raila Odinga Set To Address the Nation Together On Wednesday From Prime CS’s Office

Raila Odinga, Kenya’s opposition leader, and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi will deliver a joint state address on Wednesday, June 5.

The address will be broadcast from Mudavadi’s office at the Kenya Railways Headquarters.

According to the Prime CS’s office, the press conference will focus on Raila’s campaign for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship.

Mudavadi, Kenya’s Foreign and Diaspora Affairs CS, has actively supported President William Ruto’s efforts to promote Raila’s candidacy across the continent.

Raila announced his bid for the AUC chairmanship in February of this year. The election will be held in February 2025.

Ahead of the vote, aspirants have until August 6, 2024, to submit their CVs to their respective countries, statements of vision, and strategies for addressing Africa’s ongoing challenges.

The AU Executive Council has decided that the next chairperson of the AUC will be from East Africa.

Countries in North Africa would produce the deputy chairperson, while Central, Southern, and Western Africa would produce the six commissioners.

A month after launching his campaign, Kenya’s eastern neighbor, Somalia, nominated a candidate for the same position.

In March, the country announced the candidacy of Fawzia Adam, its former Foreign Affairs Minister.

While Kenya’s government supported Raila, the Federal Republic of Somalia’s government, led by President Hassan Mohamud, also supported Fawzia.

Kenyan President William Ruto, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu, Democratic Republic of Congo President Felix Tshisekedi, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, South Sudanese President Salva Kir, and Rwandan President Paul Kagame have already backed him.

Angola, Ghana, and Guinea Bissau’s presidents also declared their support for Raila Odinga.
