Protester Dies After Swinging on a Moving Lorry While Another Recorded Vandalizing Vehicle

A protestor died on the spot on Tuesday, July 2, after falling from a moving truck on the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway.

According to reports, the protestor was swinging at a lorry attempting to pass through a blockade in Emali, Makueni County.

As the lorry moved the blocks, the protestor fell and was run over, dying on the spot. His body was transported to a hospital in Emali Town, where he was declared dead.

The protests in Emali, which began around 10 a.m., halted traffic on the busy highway for the majority of the day.

Anti-government protesters initially blocked motorists from using the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway with stones and twigs.

Police officers responded to the scene, where they engaged the young protesters, resulting in running battles.

The protestors escalated the incident by placing rubber tyres on the highway, effectively paralyzing the road that connects Kenya’s two largest cities.

With the death of the protestor, the situation in Emali has calmed down slightly, with the majority of demonstrators still reeling from the tragedy.

The Tuesday protests, which have taken place in most parts of the country, have been marked by lawlessness and intentional looting.

Protesters in Mombasa reportedly set fire to several vehicles after three protestors were shot.

A circulating video suggested that the protestors were shot by a private citizen.
