Mathira MP Refutes Viral Impeachment Motion Against DP Gachagua

On Wednesday, social media platforms were flooded with what appeared to be an organized campaign against Deputy President William Ruto.

On the X platform, the hashtag “Gachagua Toothbrush” was trending, with multiple posts calling for the Deputy President’s impeachment.

Along with the posts were AI-generated images of street marches and parliamentary sessions. In the AI-generated images, subjects were seen holding placards that read ‘Impeach Riggy G.’

The propagators called for the Deputy President’s impeachment on the grounds that he violated constitutional provisions.

Along with the campaign, there was an alleged letter regarding an impeachment motion. The aforementioned letter was addressed to Mathira Member of Parliament Eric Wamumbi.

Citizen Digital contacted Wamumbi, who dismissed both the letter and the impeachment motion against the DP.

“The letter is fake, it is not even signed,” Wamumbi told Citizen Digital

The perpetrators of the campaign also created news cards with links to local media stations.

The posters claimed Gachagua would be impeached over a mosquito nets scandal involving his son. Citizen Digital confirmed that no local publications had distributed the cards.

The disinformation campaign follows public accusations leveled by both the Deputy President and a legislator.

On Sunday, Gachagua accused Wamumbi of undermining his anti-illicit brew campaign by allowing bars to operate in Mathira Constituency.

Wamumbi would later confirm the strained relationship with Gachagua, claiming it was more than just the closing of bars.

“It is true. There is a Rift between the Deputy president and I. The rift is not about the closed bars in Karatina town which have left the town dead for four months,” Wamumbi said.
